According to Variety, Smith will be presented with the Creative Impact in Storytelling Award and will also take part in a conversation during September 19 luncheon celebration.  The event also highlights 10 honorees who are making their mark in creative storytelling fields such as podcasting, graphic novel writing and lyric writing.

“[W]e are thrilled to honor Patti Smith with our Creative Impact in Storytelling Award,” says Variety executive Steven Gaydos. “From her earliest beginnings in the New York City and Paris avant-garde arts scenes of the 1960s, throughout her illustrious career as one of America’s most daring and iconoclastic singer-songwriters, Patti Smith has established herself as a force for intimate, truthful, insightful storytelling.”

In addition to her music, Smith has written numerous books of poetry. Her 2010 memoir Just Kids won a National Book Award.  A follow-up, 2015’s M Train, won her a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album.

Leading up to the award presentation and Q&A session, Smith will play three Midwest concerts with her longtime backing band. She’ll perform at Riot Fest in Chicago on September 15, and then mount a September 16-17 stand at Royal Oak Theatre in Detroit.
