New legislation would require education on organ donation for ninth graders in Michigan public schools.

The one hour of instruction would teach students about organ, eye, and tissue donation, plus the donor registry.

Patrick Wells-O’Brien with Gift of Life Michigan says this legislation is life saving.

“This legislation is vital for the 2,400 Michiganders right now waiting for a life-saving organ,” O’Brien said. “For them, there is often no other remedy, no other therapeutic solution.”

Wells-O’Brien says just 21% of new drivers register as organ donors.
