Everyone’s being reminded of the importance of getting tested for sexually transmitted diseases this February. Berrien County Health Department community health services supervisor Dionne Rigozzi tells us those who are sexually active and not in a monogamous relationship should get tested on a regular basis.

Rigozzi says there are troubling trends.

“We have recently seen an increase in syphilis throughout the state of Michigan and nationwide, and sadly, we work with new pregnant moms who may learn that they have this disease,” Rigozzi said. “It’s preventable and curable with testing.”

Rigozzi says infants can get syphilis from their mothers. Chlamydia and gonorrhea have also been on the rise. She recommends people of all ages get themselves tested.

“Because we see a lot of people. I think there’s a misconception out there that it’s just for young people, but ly treat clients who are well into their 70s.”

The Berrien County Health Department urges those who could be at risk to contact their doctor and get tested, noting the diseases are treatable. The health department also offers testing. Anyone interested can call to make an appointment.
