NBA – National Basketball Association – All Star Weekend
Last Night
2024 NBA All Star Game – Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, IN
Eastern Conference 211, Western Conference 186

East 211, West 186 – Points records fall at the All-Star Game, with the East beating the West 211-186
The NBA wanted more competition. It got more points instead — more than ever before.  And once again, the All-Star Game was all offense.  All-Star MVP Damian Lillard of the Milwaukee Bucks scored 39 points and the Eastern Conference beat the Western Conference 211-186 on Sunday night, with the winners putting up the most points in the game’s 73-year history. The previous mark: 196 by the West in 2016.  It was a flurry of records: The total points of 397 smashed the record of 374 set in 2017, while the East made 42 3-pointers to break the mark of 35 set by Team LeBron in 2019. The sides combined for 193 points in the first half to break the any-half record of 191 set last year, and the East tied an any-half record by scoring 104 by intermission.  Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics had 36 and Tyrese Haliburton from the hometown Indiana Pacers finished with 32 for the East, while Antetokounmpo had 23 and Jayson Tatum finished with 20.  Perhaps unnoticed: Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves scored 50 points for the West in just 28 minutes. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder scored 31 points for the West. The West scored a ton of points, too: At 186, it had the fourth-most by any team in All-Star history. And obviously, the most ever in a loss.  NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and other league executives were seeking a more competitive All-Star Game after last season’s 184-175 matchup was widely panned — and television ratings plummeted.

NBA – LeBron James still committed to Paris Olympics, but health remains the big key
LeBron James still wants to participate in the Paris Olympics this summer, sure sounds like extending his NBA career for at least a couple more seasons is an option and said he would like to see his playing days end as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. Of course, not even he knows if any or all of that is possible. James was playing in his 20th All-Star Game on Sunday, extending his record for appearances in the NBA’s midseason showcase, but arrived with a plan to not be on the court in Indy for very long because of an ongoing treatment plan for his problematic left ankle.

Will Tschetter’s layup with 7:01 left brought the Wolverines into a 63-all tie before they missed their last five-shot attempts. The Spartans led 39-37 at intermission before Michigan outscored Michigan State 13-6 in the first six minutes of the second half and led 50-45 behind a pair of layups and a jump shot by Olivier Nkamhoua. Tarris Reed Jr. recorded his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds for Michigan.

Golf – Matsuyama wins at Riviera with 62, becomes Asia’s most prolific PGA Tour winner
Hideki Matsuyama now has more PGA Tour wins than any Asian-born player. Matsuyama won the Genesis Invitational with another record. His 62 was the lowest closing round by a winner at Riviera. He needed a round like that to make up a six-shot deficit at the start of the day. There was a five-way tie for the lead at one point on the back nine. Matsuyama pulled away with three straight birdies. Two of them were inside a foot from the hole. Matsuyama now has nine PGA Tour wins. That’s one more than K.J. Choi of South Korea.

The wife of Chicago Bears great Steve McMichael says he’s improving after contracting a staph infection at a suburban hospital, and his family hopes he returns home early this week. The 66-year-old McMichael went public with an ALS diagnosis three years ago. He was hospitalized Thursday, a week after being voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was admitted with a urinary tract infection.
