Michigan deer hunters are helping to feed the hungry.

State Representative Cam Cavitt is looking for state funding for the Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger program. It takes extra venison and donates it to people in need.

Cavitt says our deer population is too big, so this will promote hunting while doing some good.

We have an overabundance of deer right now,” Cavitt said. “The herd is not healthy, and there’s been record numbers of car-deer accidents. One of the ways of putting things back in balance is to harvest some of that protein and that venison and get it to people who might be facing food security issues.”

Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger has donated 1.1 million pounds of venison. That’s helped to feed 4.6 million Michiganders.
