Ryan Langborg made five 3-pointers and scored 20 points, Boo Buie added 16 points to become Northwestern’s all-time scoring leader, and the Wildcats cruised past Michigan 76-62. Buie entered four points shy of matching John Shurna’s (2008—2012) program-best 2,038 career points. Buie hit a deep 3-pointer to break the record midway through the first half. Brooks Barnhizer scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Northwestern (19-8, 10-6), which is 8-0 in Big Ten Conference home games for the first time. Nimari Burnett scored 15 points for Michigan (8-19, 3-13), which has lost four straight and nine of its last 10 games.

(19) Notre Dame 74, Clemson 47 – Citron, Westbeld lead No. 19 Notre Dame women to 74-47 win over Clemson
Sonia Citron scored 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting, Maddy Westbeld had a double-double and No. 19 Notre Dame dominated the middle two quarters and rolled to a 74-47 win over Clemson. The Irish trailed by two after one quarter but led 59-36 entering the fourth quarter. Westbeld had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Notre Dame. Ruby Whitehorn scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Clemson. The Tigers shot just 32% (19 of 60) and had their third lowest scoring game of the season. Down one three minutes into the second quarter, Kylee Watson made two baskets inside, Citron hit a 3-pointer and the Irish led the rest of the way. After a Clemson 3, Notre Dame reeled off eight more, six by Citron and that helped build a 37-27 lead at the half.

Patrick Kane scored at 3:42 of overtime to give the Detroit Red Wings a 2-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche. Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin dropped a pass to Kane, who whipped a quick shot from the top of the hash marks past Avalanche goalie Justus Annunen for his 10th goal of the season. Nathan MacKinnon scored for the Avalanche. Larkin had Detroit’s other goal. Annunen made 28 saves while Detroit goaltender Alex Lyon stopped 30 shots. The Red Wings has not beaten the Avalanche since Feb. 27, 2016, a span of 10 games.

NCAAFB – EA Sports to block gamers from manually adding players who reject NIL opt-in
Gamers will be blocked from manually adding players to EA Sports’ new college football game who decide not to accept an offer to have their name, image and likeness used in it. EA Sports revealed the safeguard Thursday in its announcement that it has begun reaching out to athletes to pay them to be featured in the game that’s set to launch this summer. EA Sports said players who opt in to the game will receive a minimum of $600 and a copy of EA Sports College Football 25. EA Sports didn’t say how it plans to prevent people from adding the opt-outs.

Pacers 129, Pistons 115 – Tyrese Haliburton has 25 points and 13 assists in Pacers’ 129-115 victory over Pistons
All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton had 25 points and 13 assists to help the Indiana Pacers beat the NBA-worst Detroit Pistons 129-115 on Thursday night. Coming off a 32-point night Sunday in the NBA All-Star Game on his home floor at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Haliburton had his 15th game of the season with at least 25 points and 10 assists. Pascal Siakam added 20 points for Indiana. T.J. McConnell had 16 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Myles Turner finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Cade Cunningham had 30 points and eight assists for Detroit, and Jalen Duren added 15 points and 13 rebounds. The Pistons have lost four straight to fall to 8-47. They are 4-24 on the road.

Celtics 129, Bulls 112 – White and Tatum help Celtics beat Bulls 129-112 for season-high 7th straight win
Derrick White scored 28 points, Jayson Tatum added 25 and the NBA-leading Boston Celtics won their season-high seventh straight game, beating the Chicago Bulls 129-112 on Thursday night. White and Tatum each made five of Boston’s 23 3-pointers. Jaylen Brown scored 21 points, and the Celtics came away with another convincing victory after pounding Brooklyn by 50 prior to the All-Star break. Boston went from leading by 16 to trailing by three at halftime before regaining control in the third. The Celtics outscored the Bulls 37-21 in the quarter. Nikola Vucevic led Chicago with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Coby White scored 20 points and DeMar DeRozan added 19 on another rough night for the Bulls against the Celtics.

NBA – Pistons’ Stewart suspended 3 games for punching Eubanks hours before game
Detroit Pistons forward/center Isaiah Stewart was suspended three games without pay by the NBA on Thursday for punching and pushing Phoenix Suns forward/center Drew Eubanks. Stewart and Eubanks had a confrontation before a game between the Pistons and Suns on Feb. 14. Eubanks said before the game that it happened as he entered the arena. He said an argument ensued and the two were chest-to-chest before Stewart threw the punch and security intervened. ESPN, citing a filing obtained by the network, said a misdemeanor assault charge against Stewart has been dismissed by the Phoenix Municipal Court. Stewart began serving the suspension Thursday night in a loss at Indiana.

MLB – Infielder Gio Urshela and the Detroit Tigers agree to $1.5 million, 1-year contract
Infielder Gio Urshela and the Detroit Tigers agreed to a $1.5 million, one-year contract, a move that figures to create competition at third base with Zach McKinstry, Matt Vierling and Andy Ibañez. Urshela can earn $500,000 in performance bonuses for plate appearances: $100,000 each for 500 and each additional 30 through 620. The 32-year-old hit .299 with two homers and 24 RBIs in 62 games last season for the Angels, who acquired him from Minnesota. Urshela broke his left pelvis last June when he fell awkwardly at 1st base while trying to beat out a grounder.

MLB – Tim Anderson agrees to 1-year deal with the Miami Marlins,
A person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that former AL batting champion Tim Anderson has agreed to a one-year contact with the Miami Marlins. The deal for the shortstop is pending a physical.  The agreement is worth $5 million, according to ESPN. Anderson is Miami’s first big free agent addition of the offseason. The two-time All-Star became a free agent in November after the Chicago White Sox declined a $14 million option, completing a $25 million, six-year contract.

NFL – Lions re-sign kicker Michael Badgley to one-year contract
The Detroit Lions have re-signed kicker Michael Badgley to a one-year contract. Detroit made the move Thursday, bringing back the kicker who closed the regular season with the team and played in all three playoff games. Badgley also kicked for the Lions in 2022. He made all four of his field-goal attempts in four games during the regular season and tied a playoff team record with a 54-yard field goal against the Los Angeles Rams, helping the Lions win their first playoff game in more than three decades.

NFL – New Bears coordinators Shane Waldron and Eric Washington look to improve team
The Chicago Bears haven’t tipped their hand about a decision at quarterback. However new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron thinks he can improve their passing game no matter who is throwing. Waldron, who spoke with Chicago reporters for the first time along with new defensive coordinator Eric Washington, thinks his offensive system can make a difference. Waldron helped get Geno Smith’s career going again in Seattle the past three years and is a coordinator coach Matt Eberflus believes can help the Bears offense adapt better during games than in the past two years while they finished 3-14 and 7-10 under Luke Getsy.

NFL – Chiefs sign punter Matt Araiza, who was dropped from lawsuit after alleged rape
The Kansas City Chiefs are signing punter Matt Araiza, who was dropped from a lawsuit in December that had been filed by a woman who alleged she was raped by San Diego State football players in 2021. The signing was announced by Araiza’s agent, Joe Linta, and confirmed a short while later by the Super Bowl champions. The lawsuit filed by the woman came after a party in 2021 in which she claimed Araiza had sex with her in a side yard, then brought her inside a house where a group of men took turns raping her. She agreed to drop Araiza from the lawsuit when prosecutors concluded he was no longer at the party when the alleged raped occurred, and he agreed to drop a defamation countersuit against her.

Golf – Tiger Woods’ son shoots 86 in pre-qualifier for PGA Tour event
The 15-year-old son of Tiger Woods had a rough welcome in his first attempt at playing a PGA Tour event. Charlie Woods shot an 86 at a pre-qualifier for the Cognizant Classic. That’s one of four pre-qualifiers from which a total of about two dozen players advance to the main Monday qualifier for next week’s PGA Tour stop. Woods didn’t make a birdie at Lost Lake Golf Club. His round came undone with a 12 on the par-4 seventh hole. The leading score was 65. Woods tied for 110th out of 112 players who turned in a score.

Golf – Erik van Rooyen opens with a 63 in bid to win again in Mexico
Erik van Rooyen of South Africa is feeling right at home in Mexico. Van Rooyen began the Mexico Open at Vidanta with a 63 for a one-shot lead over Sami Valimaki of Finland. Van Rooyen is trying to win a PGA Tour title for the second time in four months in Mexico. He won the World Wide Technology Championship last November. Van Rooyen had a pair of eagles at the Vallarta Vidanta course. Among those two behind was Cristobal Del Solar. He shot 57 two weeks ago on the Korn Ferry Tour in Bogota.
