The city of Harford is seeking a state grant for improvements at Ely Park.

The city says the SPARK grant application has been submitted after a lengthy process of seeking public input on needs for the park. The process included a survey and a public meeting.

The city says it hopes to secure funds for a parking lot along Michigan Avenue, new sidewalks, improvements to the pavilion and restrooms, new lighting, additional benches, updated landscaping, a pickleball court, and a small playground.

City Manager Linnea Rader says all of the plans aim to support the needs of the community and ensure areas for community events like the Strawberry Festival don’t have diminished space.

The city will keep the public informed on the status of its grant application once it hears something back from the state.
