The Van Buren/Cass District Health Department is raising awareness about the importance of routine screening for sexually transmitted diseases during Sexually Transmitted Infections Month.

In particular, the department is sounding the alarm on the rising cases of syphilis in the area and urging residents to get tested to prevent serious health problems. It says if syphilis is left untreated, it can lead to severe health issues and even death.

Department Medical Director Larry Wile tells us the initial symptoms of syphilis are sores that usually last three to six weeks. While they sometimes go away, additional symptoms like visual impairment, hearing loss, and neurological problems can come later.

The Van Buren/Cass District Health Department says syphilis has seen an increase nationwide in recent years, and it encourages anyone who is sexually active to get tested.
