Actor and Benton Harbor native Ernie Hudson has been honored by the Benton Harbor City Commission.

At a Monday meeting, commissioners voted to name a portion of Vineyard Avenue “Ernie Hudson Way.”

Mayor Marcus Muhammad said with a long film career, Hudson is a household name who makes Benton Harbor proud.

“This is somebody who has had a decorated career, not a 90 day wonder, but somebody who is accomplished from the city of Benton Harbor, has a legacy that will live far beyond those sitting in these seats,” Muhammad said.

The commission’s resolution renames Vineyard from McCord to Fair Avenue in honor of Hudson. It also notes the work Hudson has done for the community, giving his time and financial support to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southwest Michigan.

Later Monday, Commissioners voted to give a key to the city to retired Michigan State Police Captain Jack Hall. Muhammad said he’s also from Benton Harbor and was the first ever Black Michigan State Police trooper. Hall changed the state police beyond that.

“He influenced the recruitment of approximately 15 men and women from the Benton Harbor community to pursue law enforcement as a career,” Muhammad said.

Muhammad said Hall will receive his key to the city at a special reception during this year’s Juneteenth celebration. It’ll feature state police troopers from all over Michigan.

Additionally, the city commission named June 15th Captain Jack Hall Day.
