A Benton Harbor man has been sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison for his role in a federal gun case.

U.S. Attorney for West Michigan Mark Totten says 29-year-old Terrence Terrial Izear Turner was sentenced this week to 165 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Totten’s office says Turner took part in a shootout at a Benton Harbor apartment complex last year. It was July 9 when the incident occurred in a parking lot of River Terrace Apartments.

Totten says during the shootout, which involved multiple shooters, an apartment across the parking lot was struck five times by gunfire. One bullet entered an occupied bedroom, and there was also a young child in the apartment.

Turner was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm following an investigation that culminated in a search warrant at a home where Turner was staying with a gun. As a convicted felon, Turner was prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms.

In addition to the prison time, he was sentenced to three years of supervised released.
