Coming up this weekend is Buchanan Pride on The Common, Buchanan’s second annual Pride festival.

Buchanan Senior Center Director Adam Burck is the festival chair and tells us the event came out of a social group he started at the senior center during COVID. He says that was an especially isolating time for not only seniors but for the LGBTQ+ community.

So we just started a social to try and develop connections within the LGBTQ plus senior community, and that group grew and around late 2022 people from the group expressed interest in helping put on a pride festival,” Burck said. “So that’s what kind of gave birth to it.”

Burck says last year’s event was a huge hit, and this year, they’ll have more than double the vendors. He’s hoping a larger crowd comes out, noting the event is free and open to all.

Our theme for this year’s Pride is celebrating our visibility for that reason alone, because there’s so many Pride festivals in our area now. And the governor last year established the LGBTQ plus commission for the state that is meant to ensure equal representation and amplify the voices.”

In addition to vendors, they’ll have live music and a DJ.

Burck notes the Buchanan Pride event comes right on the heels of Pride festivals in Dowagiac, Niles, and Benton Harbor.

The emcee for the evening will be Freddie Miller, known for his many appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and most recently, for the reality show High Hopes on Hulu. In addition to the music, food, and items for sale, a wedding officiant will be on hand to conduct weddings, as long as the couple has a wedding license in hand.

Buchanan Pride on The Common will be in the Buchanan Common from 4 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
